The Creature (La Criatura, 1977)

US Severin Films Blu-ray edition - Region all

Ana Belen and Bruno the Dog

Another weird and probably scandalous film from The Spanish Loose Cannon
Eloy De La Iglesia (1944-2006) with films as "La semana del asesino/Cannibal
Man and "Nadie oyó gritar/No One Heard a Scream" under his belt.
Another unusual and great filmmaker is Argentinian Gaspar Noé and he loves
this film as can be seen in the Extras to this disc.

The Creature is a very unusual and boundary breaking drama about a married
couple, Marco and Christina who's marriage is crumbling. Christina (Ana
Belen) is pregnant and maybe can their marriage be saved thinks Marco
(Juan Diego) who runs the TV Show "Esta Noche". But, No, No, No.

Christina has a miscarriage and when on vacation a Black German Sheperd
stares at them. She adopts the dog (after stealing it) and calls it Bruno and
they take the dog with them. She treats Bruno as her human child and when
the married couple tries to have sex the dog gets aggressive and won't allow it.
Christina's love with Bruno can't be disturbed and she gets really creepy.

She gets more intimate with her new "husband" Bruno and lets the dog
pleasure her. Marco has successfully been substituted and Christina and her
Dog husband finally dumps Marco and leave to live happily ever after -
The End. She made her choice, and maybe Marco deserves it?
He's cuckolded by a Dog.

The film is a bit political too, and certainly with black humour as De La Iglesia
plays this "family drama" straight. Marco runs a TV Show and because of
that is invited into Franco Fascist leaning high society circles. Generalissimo
Francisco Franco died in November 1975 but the fascist ideas lived on for
many years (and maybe also today, it's February 28th of 2026 when I write
this). In the film Marco buys a mountain house outside of Madrid but close
to the Franco Monument Valley of the Fallen, so maybe Marco really was a
not that good human and deserved to be cuckolded by a Dog.

Film presented in widescreen 1.85:1 ratio with Spanish mono audio and with
english subtitles. Region all. Extras:
A Strange Movie: Interview with assistant director Alejo Loren (23 minutes)
Gaspar / Eloy: Interview with filmmaker Gaspar Noé (14 minutes, 2024)
Introduction by Gaspar Noé at Cinématheque Francaise 2023
